EDAD DEL GOLFO SAN MATÍAS, PLATAFORMA CONTINENTAL ARGENTINA Y LA ESTRATIGRAFÍA EN EL GRAN BAJO DE SAN ANTONIO, PROVINCIA DE RÍO NEGRO;
Age of gulf San Matías, Argentine continental shelf, and the stratigraphy in the Great San Antonio Depression, Río Negro province

El estudio de datos sísmicos, obtenidos por el  Servicio de Hidrografía Naval y por una empresa privada en el golfo  San Matías, que aquí se presenta, muestra que sólo dos secuencias depositacionales marinas cubren la roca de base plegada que forma la depresión que aloja al golfo. La roca de base corresponde al Terciario medio-tardío, por lo que se desprende que el golfo sólo fue afectado por dos transgresiones en el Cuaternario y que, consecuentemente, la invasión atlántica original se produjo durante el Último Interglacial (MIS 5e). Estando estos resultados en desacuerdo con parte de la información estratigráfica publicada para la región que rodea la bahía de San Antonio –en el gran bajo de San Antonio– se revisó críticamente la bibliografía respectiva para esa zona, presentándose también aquí los resultados de esa revisión junto con otros datos que llevan a proponer modificaciones para el cuadro estratigráfico de la región comúnmente aceptado hasta ahora.

The study of seismic data from surveys by the Argentine Hydrographic Service and a private company in the gulf of San Mafias show that only two marine depositional sequences cover the folded bedrock making the depression lodging the gulf. Since the bedrock corresponds to the middle-late Tertiary, it follows that the gulf was impacted by only two Quaternary transgressions and, consequently, the original submergence occurred during the Last Interglacial (MIS 5e). So far as these results are at variance with part of the published onshore stratigraphic data for the region surrounding San Antonio Bay –within the great Patagonian depression of San Antonio– the appropriate literature for the area were revised. The results of such revision, as well as other onshore data also presented here, lead to propose modifications to the commonly accepted stratigraphic classification for the area.
