Memorias a la intemperie: la primera marcha por la tierra en Uruguay/ Memories under the Open Sky: First March for Land in Uruguay

Este trabajo analiza uno de los sucesos más significativos de las marchas cañeras: la represión policial ocurrida el 7 de mayo de 1964. El objetivo central es examinar la construcción de narrativas personales producidas a partir de las fotografías. El artículo se sustenta en la presentación de dos tipos de materiales. En primer lugar, exhibe las fotografías publicadas al día siguiente de los hechos por el diario El Popular y, en segundo lugar, expone los testimonios de los protagonistas. En particular, el texto se detiene en las narraciones de los integrantes de la Unión de Trabajadores Azucareros de Artigas (UTAA) y del autor de las fotografías. El trabajo concluye con la relevancia de los aportes del material gráfico a la reconstrucción de las trayectorias personales de los implicados como también a la memoria colectiva de los asalariados agropecuarios en Uruguay. AbstractThis paper deals with the analysis of one of the most significant incidents of the sugar cane cutters march: the police repression that occurred during the 7th May 1964. The main objective is to analyze the construction of personal narratives from photographs. The article is based on the presentation of two types of materials. First, it shows the photographs published the day after the events by the newspaper El Popular and, second, it exposes the memories of the main players. Particularly, the text makes focus on the narratives of the members of the Unión de Trabajadores Azucareros de Artigas (UTAA) and the photographer. The paper concludes by pointing out the importance of the contribution of graphic material for the reconstruction of the personal stories of those involved as well as the collective memory of rural workers in Uruguay.
