Warriors and Indigenous Land Struggles: Memories of Indigenous Women from Northwest Argentina

Se analizan los relatos acerca de luchas de guerreros indígenas por sus tierras a partir de la política de ocupaciónmilitar y criolla en la región del Pilcomayo, entre los siglos XIX y XX en el marco de un trabajo de re/construcciónde una memoria común realizado por mujeres indígenas del noroeste argentino. La decisión de recuperarsus reflexiones se vincula con la intención de poner de relieve, por un lado, los efectos de ese trabajo sobre laproducción de territorialidades y, por el otro, de mostrar cómo el rescate de estas gestas de guerreros indígenasposibilita su inscripción en una tradición identitaria de resistencia, legitimando además sus actuales reivindicacionesdel territorio. En este proceso se destaca el potencial de la memoria como herramienta analítica ypolítica en función de las luchas territoriales y de reconocimiento de los pueblos indígenas. Y cierta búsquedapor establecer continuidades entre las luchas históricas del pasado y las formas actuales de resistencia indígena.

Within the framework of a work done by indigenous women from Northwest Argentina on the re/construction of a commonmemory, this paper analyses narratives about indigenous warriors’ struggles for their land since the beginning of the military andcreole (“criollo”) occupation policy in the Pilcomayo region between the 19th and 20th century. By choosing their own reflections,my intention, on one hand, is to highlight the effects this work had on the production of territorialities and, on the other, to showhow rescuing these indigenous warriors’ deed makes possible its inscription into a tradition of identity resistance, adding legitimacyto their current territorial claims. Through this process we emphasize the potential of memory as an analytical and politicaltool in the face of territorial struggles and recognition of indigenous peoples as well as the search to establish continuities betweenhistorical fights from the past, and present forms of indigenous resistance.
