Founding Myths in Chile and the Persistence of Mapuche Memory: From Exclusion to the Struggle for Territory;
Los mitos fundacionales en Chile y la persistencia de la memoria mapuche: de la exclusión a la lucha por el territorio

In this work we reflect on the foundational myths that supported the creation of the Chilean political community, on the basis ofwhich the uniting and integration of diverse social groups, some of them antagonistic to each other, was sought; we also reflecton the strength of adherence to these myths and their importance as affective foundations that unite different peoples aroundshared symbolic referents. Likewise, we address the conflict that has historically confronted the Chilean State with the Mapuchepeople in terms of the collective memories they have faced with respect to the creation of an official historical memory and thepersistence of the collective memory of the Mapuche people, which has endured until now in spite of the attempts to subsume itinto the margins of the official memory; we also reflect on the fundamental role collective memory plays in the struggle of theseindigenous people and on the mythological and historical elements that it comprises, as well as on the influence of the symboliccomponent of it in the political struggle of the Mapuche people.

Este trabajo reflexiona sobre los mitos fundacionales que sustentaron la creación de la comunidad políticachilena, mediante los cuales se trató de cohesionar e integrar a una diversidad de grupos sociales, algunos deellos antagónicos entre sí. Asimismo, observamos la fuerza de adhesión que generan dichos mitos y la importanciaque tienen en tanto resortes afectivos que unifican a personas diversas en torno a referentes simbólicoscompartidos. El trabajo también aborda el conflicto que ha enfrentado históricamente al Estado chileno con elpueblo mapuche en términos de las memorias colectivas que se han contrapuesto en el mismo, con respecto ala creación de una memoria histórica oficial y a la persistencia de la memoria colectiva del pueblo mapuche, lacual perdura hasta la fecha a pesar de los intentos por subsumirla en los márgenes de la memoria oficial. En estesentido, reflexionamos sobre el papel fundamental que juega la memoria colectiva en la lucha de este puebloindígena y sobre los elementos mitológicos e históricos que la conforman, así como sobre el influjo que tiene elcomponente simbólico de la misma en la lucha política del pueblo mapuche.
