The mouth of the Riachuelo is a classic theme in the historiography of Buenos Aires. Thetraditional narrative indicates a historic succession, the ancient mouth / new mouth, birth of theharbor as a wintering site, slave trade, barracks, naval construction, arrival of immigrants, industrialdevelopment, pollution, and city “development” . The primary sources used for analysis have beenmainly documentaries. Although from the geology science was emphasized the concept of landscapeanthropization process, it was from archeology science that development came with field work in publicand private works, discussing the archaeological landscapes in a dynamic spatial coastal estuarine fluvialenvironments. The research project of the First Buenos Aires in its geoarchaeological section, directedby Pablo Tchilinguirian and Marcelo Weissel, addressed this problem. In sum, the lack of environmentalrecords was the reason for the field work achieved in the past 10 years, where the goal was to build aninter-disciplinary body of data. This paper presents background and specific objectives that led to thediscovery of the remains of a shipwreck of Iberian origin in the estuarine sector of the mouth of theRiachuelo - Dock 1 of Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires.
