Some authors holding that Adam Smith’s invisible hand is the hand of God have posited the idea that Smith accepted the stoic view that the vices and follies of mankind were necessarily part of the plan of God. This paper will show that for Smith the vices and follies of mankind are not necessary for economic matters; whereas virtuous behaviour is. In relation to the invisible hand, the paper also shows that the success of the invisible hand in TMS and WN is only possible with virtuous individuals.
