La colección Biblioteca Popular de Cultura Colombiana (1942-1952): ampliación del público lector y fortalecimiento del campo editorial colombianos

The current article presents the research results about the publishing project led by Germán Arciniegas, when he was Minister of Education of Colombia: The collection of the “Biblioteca Popular de Cultura Colombiana”. This project shows some editorial trends of the official edition in Colombia during the first half of the twentieth century as well as the way in which the editor configured his readers and supported the idea of expanding the market for Colombian book. In this way, this project contributed to the modernization of the Colombian publishing industry, at a time of transition towards the professionalization-specialization of the function of editors and writers in Colombia, and of an increase of the reading public.

Este artículo presenta los resultados de investigación sobre el proyecto editorial dirigido por Germán Arciniegas cuando fue ministro de Educación de Colombia: la colección Biblioteca Popular de Cultura Colombiana. Tal proyecto manifiesta algunas de las líneas editoriales que siguieron las ediciones oficiales en Colombia durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, así como también la manera en la que su editor configuró sus lectores y sostuvo la idea de ampliar el mercado para el libro colombiano. De esta forma, este proyecto editorial contribuyó a la modernización de la industria editorial colombiana, en un momento de transición hacia la profesionalización-especialización del oficio de editor y de escritor en Colombia, y de aumento del público lector.
