Autoimmune Diseases Promoting Coronary Disease in Women
Las enfermedades autoinmunes son trastornos inflamatorios sistémicos que afectanmúltiples órganos entre ellos el sistema cardiovascular. Son afecciones muchomás frecuentes en mujeres.Estasenfermedades se asocian a ateroesclerosis prematura con el desarrollo decardiopatía isquémica a temprana edad. La coronariopatía en estos casos, puedeser la forma de presentación o aparecer en la evolución de la enfermedad autoinmuneya establecida. La causa de este proceso acelerado es multifactorial. En las últimasguías de prevención cardiovascular en la mujer se considera dentro de lacategoría “en riesgo” a las mujeres con enfermedades autoinmunes.
Autoimmune diseases are systemic inflammatory conditionsaffecting different organs, including the cardiovascularsystem. These diseases are more commonin women and are associated with premature atherosclerosiswith development of coronary artery diseaseat an early age. In these cases, coronary artery diseasemay be the first manifestation or may appear whenautoimmune disease has already been established.Multiple factors are responsible for this acceleratedprocess.According to the last guidelines for the preventionof cardiovascular disease in women, women with autoimmuneconditions are considered to be “at risk”.(1, 2) This means that women with this conditions aremore likely to develop cardiovascular disease (CVD).In this setting, the prevalence of ischemic heartdisease has increased as a consequence of higher lifeexpectancy in these patients due to improved therapy.(3) In turn, specific therapy for autoimmune diseasesincreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.Premature coronary artery disease is the leadingcause of morbidity and mortality in patients with connectivetissue disorders. (4, 5)The goal of this review is to update the impact ofautoimmune diseases in coronary artery disease inwomen.
