¿Hacer visible la desaparición?: las fotografías de detenidos-desaparecidos de la ESMA en el testimonio de Víctor Basterra / Making disappearance visible? — Photographs of the disappeared at the ESMA on Victor Basterra’s testimony

Víctor Basterra, sobreviviente de la ESMA, pudo sacar de ese centro clandestino de detención una cantidad importante de negativos, fotografías y otros documentos que iban a ser destruidos por los militares. Las imágenes de la ESMA tomadas “desde adentro” acompañan las palabras de Basterra en su larga trayectoria testimonial, comenzada en 1984, cada vez que presenta su declaración en algún lugar. Sin embargo, a lo largo de los años, la relación entre palabra e imagen se fue modificando; las fotos adquirieron nuevos sentidos y la figura de Basterra como testigo fue asociándose de diversos modos con esas fotografías. ¿Cómo se articulan palabra e imagen en los diversos momentos? ¿Qué sentidos adquieren esas fotos con el correr del tiempo? ¿Qué valor les da el mismo testigo en sus diferentes declaraciones?Este artículo analiza la primera circulación pública de esas fotos en dos publicaciones de 1984 y 1985. Luego, las compara con un libro realizado 20 años después, en 2005, y con una muestra fotográfica expuesta en 2007. El análisis intenta plantear continuidades y rupturas en la presentación pública y en la articulación entre palabra e imagen en torno al testimonio de Víctor Basterra. AbstractVíctor Basterra, an ESMA survivor, was able to take away from this detention clandestine center a substantial number of photographs, rolls of film, and other documents, which were meant to be destroyed by the military. The images of the ESMA, taken from the inside, have come together with Basterra’s words on his long testimonial career, since its beginning in 1984, every time he has presented his testimony somewhere. Over the years, however, the relationship between word and image has changed; the photographs have taken new meanings, and the figure of Basterra as a witness has been connected to those photographs in a variety of ways. How are word and image intertwined in different periods? What meanings do those photos take over time? What value are the photographs given by the witness on each of his statements?This article analyzes the first time those pictures were shown to the public on two documents in 1984 and 1985. In addition, it compares them to a book made 20 years later in 2005, and to a 2007 photo exhibition. This analysis intends to show the continuities and transformations on public display, and on word-image intertwining, focusing on Basterra’s testimony.
