Encuentros entre espacios y tiempos mediados por la memoria. La toponimia como forma de abordaje territorial;
Space and time mediated by memory. Toponymy in western La Pampa in the twentieth century

Los topónimos cristalizan el encuentro entre espacios y tiempos, expresan las conexiones entre lugares, memorias colectivas e identidades. En el presente artículo pretendemos analizar los procesos de construcción social del espacio en el oeste de La Pampa, estableciendo relaciones entre las categorías de lugar, toponimia, poder y memoria. Nos preguntamos si cada lugar imprime ciertas marcas identitarias que lo diferencian de otros, expresadas simbólicamente a través de la toponimia y si éstas forman parte de las estrategias de control de los lugares en contextos de revalorización de las tierras. En este marco analizamos los topónimos, desde una perspectiva diacrónica, en cuatro espacios diferenciados del oeste de La Pampa. Desde el punto de vista metodológico, además de los estudios previos referidos a la toponimia en La Pampa y la información reconstruida en las entrevistas y el trabajo de campo realizado durante los años 2008-2011, hemos consultado fuentes cartográficas  que se encuentran en distintos archivos provinciales. Proponemos abordar el estudio de la toponimia como una herramienta complementaria y útil para las ciencias sociales en general y el análisis geográfico en particular.

Place names are the result of the meeting between spaces and times; they express a struggle for control of the territory and the construction of the collective memories. In this article we intend to analyze processes of territorialization in the west of La Pampa, establishing relationships among the categories of place, territory, toponymy, power and memory. We start from the assumption that every place, as a product of the process of construction of power relationships, has certain identity marks that differentiate it from others, symbolically expressed through the toponymy. Within such framework, we analyze place names, from a diachronic perspective, in four areas of the west of La Pampa. First we analyze the names given by dominant discourse and territoriality to western jurisdictions, to then address names that peasants gave to their “puestos” and their meanings. We describe and compare the names of places in the western ecoregions through case studies in the places of Chos Malal, La Humada, La Puntilla and Paso Maroma. Finally, we generate some reflections on the potential of these representations within the context of expansion of the agricultural frontier and emerging conflicts.
